A SEASON FOR NON-VIOLENCE

“Nonviolence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man.”
-Mohandas K. Gandhi

“We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”
-Martin Luther King Jr.

Non-Violence starts at home. If home is where the heart is, that means non-violence starts in our hearts. Each of us has the ability to choose peace – to live from a peaceful heart. Although the Season For Non-Violence is from January 30 (marking the death of Gandhi) through April 4 (marking the death of Martin Luther King Jr.), we can decide to ‘carry the vision’ throughout the entire year. We can make it a season for ALL seasons.

WHAT IS A STROKE?

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. Many of our members own their own business and/or interface with the community daily. A stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke: . Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

  • Ask the individual to smile.
  • Ask the person to raise both arms.
  • Ask him or her to speak a simple sentence.
  • If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions. They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association’s annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke victim and prevent brain damage.
