PROGRAM COMMITTEE REPORT

Dear Sequim Soroptimists,

When you think about it, our club is awesome. Already this year we have collectively provided 5 ½ months service to the community with the Medical Loan Closet. It's headed up by Colleen Blazier and a dedicated group of Sequim Soroptimist women who schedule their time to be on-call for community members needing to borrow a piece of medical equipment from our Loan Closet.

Peg Rinker
handled the Caring Trees Project this year. Are you familiar with the Caring Tree Project?

It is where elderly people who are residents of assisted living centers can make a Christmas wish and have it come true. Peg and her crew were able to take care of three local assisted living homes where there are residents who have no family to visit or care for them at Christmas. Peg Rinker has a big heart.

Laurel Bentson
handled the Adopt-a-Family. What a fun project. Laurel made it look very easy, but she had to locate a family and then talk with them about what their most pressing needs and wants were. And then Laurel went out and fulfilled some of their hopes and dreams this year with money budgeted from past fund-raising events held by our club. It makes me feel good to know we were able to give that family an abundance they never expected this Christmas.

Now we are looking forward to the activities that must be managed over the next few months for our 7th annual Garden Show. The Sequim Soroptimist Gala... Garden Show and Sale is our club’s biggest fund-raiser. It presents us with great opportunity and potential for return on our club members’ investment of time and effort. It is fun working the different stations and providing services for vendors and attendees.

7th Annual GARDEN SHOW is
MARCH 19 - 20, 2005

Also this year, as a club we will be deciding how much we’d like to commit to helping with Project Independence, the quadrennial project selected by Soroptimist International. It is a program that provides micro-loans and training to 1200 women who live in Bosnia, Rwanda, and Afghanistan. These women are participating in the project in hopes to create a life worth living after the ravages of war have ripped through their countries. I love this project and hope that our club will be able to figure prominently in this humanitarian effort to help these women advance their status in life.

It’s hard to grasp how powerful Soroptimist International is and how much of a positive difference we can make as members. I encourage each of you to become even more involved and attend a Regional and/or District meeting. That is where I saw the true scope of this organization’s impact on making a difference in a woman’s life. I hope you are as excited as I am about the next few months as we start raising money to host programs that we feel meet our mission: To advance the status of women and girls locally and around
the world.

In Soroptimist Friendship,
Megan O’Donnell
