We
Have Award Winners! Violet Richardson Award A very deserving young woman named MCKINLEY FITZGERALD is the winner of our local Violet Richardson Award, and her application will be forwarded to region and hopefully on to national! McKinley was our guest at the January 11 meeting. This award is named after the president of the 1st Soroptimist Club and is a cash grant award to a young woman between the ages of 14 and 17 making the world a better place through her volunteer efforts. THANKS TO DALE SIMON for promoting this award, taking care of the applications, procuring community judges, and all of the other work that goes with taking responsibility for this award. |

Women’s
Opportunity Award Since our club had not named a 2003 winner for the Women’s Opportunity Award, we have belatedly awarded Kayla Stevenson with that $1,000 cash grant award. Kayla is a young woman, head of household, with a young daughter who has returned to college in order to better her and her daughter’s lives. Kayla works as a hairdresser at Mad Maggi in Sequim and attends Peninsula College evening classes in order to get her prerequisites for the 2-year registered nurse program. As for the 2004 winner, Gina Giefer was chosen by the panel of community judges. Gina also is a single mother, head of household, with two young children and her ailing father who lives with them. She is currently in her second year of the nursing program at Peninsula College. THANKS TO JUDY OGILVIE for coordinating everything with regard to this award. |

And
we have WIN! WIN started off this year with an evening dessert event in November at the Oak Table Café. Our distinguished speaker was Washington State Supreme Court Justice Susan Owens, formerly a District Court Judge in Clallam County. Susan was introduced by her friend and Port Angeles lawyer, Karen Unger. Karen highlighted the importance of friendship in their lives and careers. Justice Owens gave us an idea of what a Supreme Court Justice does, told us how she got where she is today, and encouraged the WIN students to invest in their education. |
