Oct. 14, 2003 History of S.I. Sequim. Our Sequim Club was founded on May 2, 1947 – 56 years ago – with 31 charter members. Today, we have one charter member still living – and still a member of the club – Evelyn Lehman (3rd from Right back row above). S.I.Sequim was chartered together with S.I. Port Townsend, here in Sequim. S.I. Port Angeles was the sponsoring Club. The chartering was held at the Olympic Café, which was located on Washington Street, near Sequim Avenue, where “Over the Fence” and “The Sundown Saloon” are today. For many years the Club met at noon every Monday. They met at the Olympic Café, at Isa’s Café and even in Evelyn Lehman’s basement for potluck. It’s been only in recent years that we meet on Tuesday mornings, every other week

28, 2003 Organization of Soroptimist International. Soroptimist Int’l is an association of 4 federations: S.I. of the Americas, S.I. of Europe, S.I. of Great Britain & Ireland, & S.I. of the South West Pacific. Clubs are the basic and the most important unit in all 4 federations. All federations are divided into regions (unions in S.I. Europe), and some regions in S.I. of the Americas are further divided into districts. S.I. of the Americas consists of North & South America, plus Guam, Japan, Korea, the Philippines and Taiwan We speak of Soroptimist gatherings at various levels of the organization - and there are different designations at each level. Clubs have meetings. Districts also hold meetings. Regions have conferences. And S.I. of the Americas (or S.I.A.) and Soroptimist Int’l hold conventions. |

S.I. Sequim is, of course, a club in S.I.A. It is part of Northwestern Region and District 1 of the region. District 1 is the largest district in the U.S. It consists of Western Washington north of Vancouver, and all of Alaska. Northwestern Region is made up of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, northern Idaho, & Montana. Our district meeting (annual) was held earlier this month in Ocean Shores, and the regional conference (annual) will be held in Spokane in April. S.I.A convention is held biannually (even years) & will be in Calgary next August. S.I. conventions take place every 4 years (odd years), & the convention in 2003 was in Sydney, Australia. We are part of one huge, world wide organization - members (mostly women) in approximately 3300 clubs in 104 countries.* That’s a lot of power! * 104 countries as of April 2000; 3149 clubs as of July 1999. |
