Letter from the Editor
Dear Friends:

Have you ever had something fit you to a T? Being a Soroptimist, I have to answer in the affirmative – many times over. At the beginning of the 2002-2003 Soroptimist year, we were advised of a new position within Soroptimist, the title being Internet Coordinator (IC). A brief description of the IC job was given to the club presidents. A full explanation of the responsibilities for this new position would be defined at the District 1 Meeting October 12 and 13, 2002.

President Leah asked if I would be interested in taking on this role for our club and if I would attend the District Meeting. With my other commitments to SI Sequim (Education/WIN Coordinator, Newsletter Coordinator, Webmaster), I was concerned about taking on another job. I agreed to accept the position as long as there were no big surprises about the responsibilities.

Leah gave me a copy of the District 1 Meeting info. It said that on Saturday night members were encouraged to wear the outfit of their favorite team. That’s because our beloved Governor DeDe Olson has chosen a theme of TEAM – Together Everyone Achieves More. The info also suggested everyone wear red, white and blue as much as possible.

A thought came to mind about doing up white T-shirts with red and blue lettering to say: TEAM Soroptimist. I provided a design and emailed it to the members scheduled to attend the District meeting. Sandy Reed replied that we could instead have T-shirts in various bright colors with the words FLOWER POWER to promote our Garden Show. What a grand idea!

Sandy purchased six shirts in various bright colors; I set to work on the design. After several drafts, a final layout was chosen. I purchased the transfer paper and printed the design on it. Then, the transfers were ironed on the shirts. At our October 1st regular Soroptimist meeting, we introduced the shirts to our club.

They were well received and we were excited about showing them off to the rest of the District!

On October 12th , I rode to the District Meeting with Sandy and Gail.(I actually got
to leavework at 1:00 p.m. that day!) It’s interesting to get together and talk with friends. We always seem to be able to fix the problems of the world. ;-)

Leah was my roommate for the two nights; Sandy Reed and Gail Frick shared a room. Although Sally Sue Barry was staying with her daughter who lives near the hotel, Sally Sue attended the meetings with the four of us.

It was amazing to see the enthusiasm of the Soroptimist women at the District Meeting. It was enlightening to hear the stories of other clubs; Soroptimists are very talented women with a good sense of humor. I was impressed with the organization of the event. What a reminder that we are all part of something larger than ourselves. Each of us is important to the success of the TEAM.

Part of the District meeting is a Tell & Sell. Clubs can bring items to give away and sell. Leah thought since Sequim is the Lavender Landmark of the Northwest, it would be appropriate to sell some lavender items. She was able to purchase a gallon of lavender lotion and small bottles at a discount. Leah and I designed a label (lots of emails going back and forth till the right layout was chosen) and we printed the labels with lavender lettering. Leah filled the bottles. Leah, Sandy, Gail and I put the labels on the bottles just before we set up our table at the Tell & Sell. We also took some other lavender products from Lavender and Lace and from (Cathy’s) “Angel Farm.” The Tell and Sell was so much fun and we sold many items!

In preparation for the District meeting, Ruth designed a mini-flyer for our upcoming Garden Show. I had copies made and brought them along to the District Meeting. Saturday evening each club came dressed in TEAM garb. There were so many great “uniforms” it would be difficult to choose a “best” team outfit. After everyone was seated in the dining room, Sandy, Gail and I distributed the flyers. I would hand a bunch to a person at the table and say, “We are promoting our Sequim Garden Show!” To my surprise, there were many women who commented that they were aware of the show which is just another reminder of how we are all connected.

This was my first District Meeting; I am a rookie after nearly five years as a Soroptimist. I encourage other members to attend Soroptimist meetings: Area; Region; District; Federation.

And remember to invite prospective new members to our Soroptimist meetings. They can share breakfast, coffee or tea, and ideas. Once they see SI Sequim, they may find it fits them to a T.

Light and Love,
